Library Board Member, Kim Pappas, answers questions posed by Library Director, Deanna Britton.
1.) Why do you love the Library?
My fondest memories of the library were riding my bike to check out books to participate in the Summer Reading Program as an elementary school student. I would have a backpack full! In addition to a contest to see who could read the most books, there was also an art/poster contest about one of the books read. I always looked forward to participating in both and actually won a time or two.
Books and periodicals found in the library serve so many purposes. They allow one to escape into another place or time, learn a new hobby, research a project, and much more. Programs offered by the library expose patrons to things they might not otherwise be exposed to - from new authors to computer classes. They can also be social outlets for members - a way to meet people and make new friends.
Personally, from exploring my love of books as a child, doing research for high school and college classes, taking my children to programs hoping to instill a love of reading in them, getting decorating and how-to ideas, to continuing my love of reading as an adult, the library has always been an important part of my life.
2.) Why do you spend your valuable time to support our work?
I believe the library is an important part of our town providing so much more than escape into books. It offers all types of learning opportunities to all ages in our community. I feel like the 'age of technology’ might make some less supportive of what the public library offers and I want to help ensure our wonderful library stays relevant and is supported by the local government and community. I am honored to serve on the Library Board.
